Website Easter Eggs - A Little Can Go a Long Way
Rona Kilmer - 12.7.2009 2:30 PM
Not everyone has the budget or the cause for an uber creative Flash site like EinsteinBros.com or the visually stunning JonathanYuen.com but that doesn’t mean your site needs to be dull. Don’t be afraid to spice it up and add little surprises for your users.
Take your Website one step further by offering users just a little bit more. Perhaps you can add a little personality like the flying “W” that lives in the Webolutions.com header? Yahoo.com has a hidden gem. Click on the exclamation point in the logo and you’ll hear the Yahoo yodel. Yahoo even changes it every once and awhile to keep you guessing. KyanMedia.com has a hidden underworld. See if you can find it. (Hint: Investigate the earthworm in the footer.)
Some sites have opted for custom 404 pages (those pesky “page not found” error pages). Some of my favorites (via Smashing Magazine) are huwshimi.com, jhuskisson.com, and fryewiles.com. Hopefully, your users will never have to see a 404 page on your site but if they do, why not give them a chuckle?
The possibilities are endless and those added touches can show your users that you care enough to push the envelope a little and provide them with a unique experience.
We want to hear from you!
Have you ever discovered a Website easter egg?
What are some of your favorite hidden gems?
