Three Search Engine Marketing Resolutions For 2012
Patrick Yuan - 1.9.2012 10:00 AM
While you may be thinking that your New Year’s resolution should be to start working out, spend more time with your family, or take up a new hobby, you shouldn’t forget about your Search Engine Marketing (SEM) when making resolutions. Even if you’ve had a great 2011, here are three areas you can focus on to make sure you have an even better 2012 when it comes to your Internet Marketing efforts.
1. Create New, Quality, Optimized Content
A stagnant site is not going to climb the search engine result pages (SERPs) for the keywords you are trying to rank for. Search engines like to know that your website is not only still relevant to your keywords but that it has new, fresh content. New content also entices visitors to return to your website. Even if these people are just returning to read your new content and not convert to a lead, their interest in your Website lets the search engines know that the content is high quality, which helps improve your rankings.
If you are going to create new content, do it correctly. Create a schedule of new content to ensure you release content on a regular basis - daily, weekly, or even monthy. Determine the content subject up front, so you can make sure you are sticking to the relevant keywords and are not struggling for ideas at the last minute. As for writing quality content, check out our recent blog post for ideas.
2. Investigate Your Analytics
If you have an SEM campaign and you are not set up for analytics, you need to get set up. Google Analytics provides a relatively simple tool to track the success of your website. If you have tracking set up, but you don’t regularly check and analyze the data, then start analyzing, as there is no way to know if your online marketing efforts are a success.
"Investivating Analytics" means digging into deeper data beyond site visits. How long are they staying? How did they find your site? How does the visit end? With this data in hand, you are now equipped to see what keywords are generating good quality traffic, and which keywords are not. This information can also help you determine what changes to make to your Website.
3. Stay Ahead of the Curve
While quality content and analytics will always be a major part of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the landscape as a whole changes constantly. What is important now may not be important next month. The only way to make sure that you consistently climb in the rankings is to make sure you are aware of what changes are coming, and to stay flexible enough to quickly adjust your strategy accordingly. The best way to go about this is to get in tune with the world of SEO via blog and other news information and relevant industry content. Being more equipped to meet the changes of the search engine can mean the difference between ranking at the top, and not.
How to use this Information
Remember that while these items are extremely important, they are not the only things to focus on this year, they are simply items that will continue to be important to your Search Engine Marketing. If you continue to produce revelant, quality content that includes good keywords and gets socially shared, your rankings will be in good shape by the end of 2012.
Utilize your analytics to see trends in content topics and what is currently being shared by your readers. Use this data to strategically create your blog posts.
