Social Marketing: A Channel for Success
Nicole Hurdle - 8.19.2009 9:15 AM
Social Marketing is becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society. Many companies are beginning to direct their entire marketing campaigns towards Social Marketing.
As a Social Marketing Coordinator at a Marketing/Web Design company, I am very drawn to social Websites such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. Just the other day I was at home cleaning with the television on for background noise. I heard some catchy music coming from the TV and looked over at it. On the screen, was a commercial where a series of dancers doing different moves and then pausing several times when they were in certain formations. These formations were representative of the “t” from Twitter and the “f” from Facebook. As the dancers continue to move to the beat of the music a voice comes over and says, “It’s the fastest, most connected Sidekick yet,” as the screen begins to display the T-Mobile phone with its screen showing Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube icons.
A few commercial breaks later, a Verizon Wireless commercial comes on featuring a family of four. I see two parents practically glued to their phones while their boy and girl are looking at them. The girl states angrily, “Mom, just because we’re Facebook friends does not mean you can write ‘I love you’ all over my wall!” The son proceeds to say, “And Dad, cool it with the Twitter updates, okay?”
Perhaps you have seen these commercials too. Isn't it amazing that these companies are now solely focusing their marketing campaigns on the assumption that people understand, know, and use these social networks? To produce a national commercial such as these can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not to mention the time spent by their marketing teams devising these ideas. Though both Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile are enormous companies, there is a reason they are spending time and money on social media.
These phones are being marketed based on their capabilities to connect to these social networks. Now you can participate in social networking conversation for your personal profiles as well as your business profiles that you have created. There is another article in Webolutions blog that dives a little deeper into determining if there is a difference between personal and business profiles. Adding social networks for your business is crucial now in a society that is thriving off of that media.
The time is now! If you are reading this and do not have an active, effective Facebook page, or Twitter page for your business, you are missing out on ROI for your company. The key words are an active and effective page. Without these components, you are wasting time, money, and efforts. Remember, your produced content for all of these Websites must provide value to your clients in order to ensure positive success from these marketing channels.
Can you think of other commercials and/or companies that are beginning to exclusively focus their marketing on social media?
