Effective Web Design and Content - Utilize A/B Testing
Rona Kilmer - 6.13.2011 8:53 AM
How are you measuring the results of your website? If you aren’t measuring the effectiveness of your design and copy choices, you could be missing out on conversions. A/B testing is a cost-effective way to make sure you are making the right copy and design decisions.
Take a look at some simple A/B tests that garnered improved results for these companies. Can you guess which version performed better? You might be surprised in some cases.
Copy testing example - http://whichtestwon.com/archives/11405
In this A/B test the only difference between the two landing pages was the text used for the call-to-action. One set of copy led to 74% more leads!
E-commerce example - http://whichtestwon.com/archives/8250
In this example an online store increased purchases by 44% and revenue per purchase increased by 67%. All this from simply trying out different product shots.
Design layout example - http://whichtestwon.com/archives/7946
In this case, the entire layout of a landing page was tested. Because more then one item was different, it’s hard to pinpoint why one version resulted in a 91.4% boost in form submits, but the results are undeniable.
A/B testing is a simple and cost-effective way to make sure your design and copy choices are getting the best results for you. As these examples show, sometimes small changes can make a huge difference.
We want to hear from you.
How are you measuring the effectiveness of your website’s design and copy? Have you seen big results after making small changes?

This was a really helpful article. I'm already 90% done with a rocking website developed by Webolutions, but I'm also working on a side project that, due to its nature, is being done, basically, in-house. Tips like this keep me on my toes regarding it. Thanks!
