Denver Social Media for Business Group Hears from Attorney on Legal Issues
Mike Hanbery - 2.29.2012 8:00 AM
“Social media,” said Jim Thomas, featured speaker at Social Marketing for Business – Join the Conversation, “is especially useful for businesses if it does not get them sued.”
Sage advice, indeed, from the author of the No Funny Lawyers blog (Thomas advised, “There are no funny lawyers; only funny people who make bad career choices.”)
Discussion points included:
Privacy and Confidentiality
What rights does my business have to use information, photos, etc. about our customers and employees in our social media? What rights do I have to see my employees’ social media? How do my employees’ social media affect my rights to protect my trade secrets and enforce covenants not to compete?
Ownership and Social Media Sites
When can I use something that I find online on my website/blog/Facebook/Pinterest, etc? Is giving credit to the original author enough to avoid copyright infringement? Who owns my company’s Facebook and Twitter accounts—the business or the employee who updates it?
Negative Comments
Gripes by customers, competitors, employees. Can’t I sue if the comments aren’t true? It’s even worse when my own employees are posting snarky comments about each other or the company; what can I do?
In addition to the structured knowledge exchange about legal, policy and copyright considerations of social media marketing, the event's Tip Groups provided items attendees could use immediately. One of the favorites came from Kevin Campbell of Kevin Campbell Films, who provided a great resource: The YouTube Creator's Playbook.
A complete video chronology of the event is available on Webolutions Facebook Page courtesy of Dale Honning Videography.
As always, attendees enjoyed delicious breakfast fare from My Favorite Muffin and Peet’s Coffee SouthGlenn in the spacious, professional surroundings of the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce.
The entire business community is welcome to attend the monthly gathering and contribute to the ongoing conversation on Facebook and Twitter. Future topics are:
- Friday March 16 – Social Media’s Role in Your Search Engine Placement
- Friday April 20 – Utilizing Video in Social Media Marketing
- Friday May 18 – Social Media Marketing to a Targeted Local Audience
We hope to see you there! Thank you for joining the conversation!
