Denver Social Media: Privacy and Copyright Considerations
Mike Hanbery - 6.22.2011 12:30 PM
On June 15, 2011, Denver's premier Social Media for Business Group asked and answered questions about current laws, trends, expectations and what is in and out of bounds with regards to ownership and rights of content we find and place on the Internet.
We also ate delightful muffins from My Favorite Muffin and sipped gourmet java from Peet's Coffee Southglenn. If you add these places to your purchase patterns, it will quickly become permanent. Yum.
Some of the discussion points were:
Copyrights and the Internet
When can I use something that I find online on my website? Is giving credit to the original author enough to avoid copyright infringement?
Sharing by Social Media Sites
Why can I embed YouTube videos on my website without asking for permission? Why can I share photos taken by my Facebook friends with other Facebook friends without worrying about copyright infringement?
Ownership and Social Media Sites
Does Facebook own my content? What rights do I give up when I post things on social media sites?
Sharing Pictures and Video on Social Media Sites
Can I share video I take of business events? Do I need permission from everyone in the picture to post it online? Are there instances where I should be leery of posting business event photos online?
The group is co-sponsored by Denver Dataman, the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce and Dale Honning Videography. Dale provides a monthly recap of the entire event, so if you missed it you can watch it here:
We meet the third Friday of every month at the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce. The entire Denver business community, Chamber member or not, is welcome. We hope you'll join us for (delicious free breakfast and) structured knowledge exchange and business networking.
Our Group’s Upcoming Events (subject to change)
- Friday July 15 – Selecting the Right Social Media Tools for Your Business
- Friday Aug 19 – What Does Social Media ROI Really Mean?
- Friday Sept 16 – Creating a Social Media Action Plan
