Denver Social Media: 10 Tips for Creating a Successful Content Generation Plan
Mike Hanbery - 2.22.2011 8:00 AM
On Friday, February 18th, Denver's premier social media for business Meetup group confronted strategic content generation. Here is a summary recap:
Overview
What is “successful content”? This is content that achieves your goal of engaging your target audience(s) and succeeding in achieving your social media marketing goals.
Creating a Successful Content Generation Plan
1, Clearly define the results you expect to achieve through your social media marketing activities
- Contacts
- Awareness
- Sales
- Brand Engagement
- Referrals
- Etc.
2. Clearly define the key personas you wish to influence
- Who are they?
- Why would they care about what you have to say?
- What can add to their lives?
- How can you stand out?
3. Clearly define your brand experience
- What do you want to convey?
- What experience do you want people to have with you?
4. Clearly define the keywords to include in your ongoing program for SEO purposes
5. Clearly define what “on brand” content you will produce (Your Resources?) AND / OR Clearly define exactly how you are going to participate with other’s content.
- How are you going to add value into people lives in a way that achieves your goals?
6. Clearly determine how often and through what mediums you will participate (Your Resources?)
7. Establish Publishing and Listening Tools
- Google Alerts
- HootSuite
- Etc…
8. Establish measurement tracking which allows you to see and measure progress
- Can be as easy as an Excel file with goals and recorded results
9. Schedule your social media marketing time and activities like any other task
10. Measure results and make plan adjustments

These notes, along with the notes I took during the February 18 session, give me a great resource for additional exploration and learning. Using these guidelines, I realize that I need to focus more on point #2 - the personas I want to influence. This is a topic I've done some research on and have collected a number of good resources. Thanks for the push to dig deeper.
