Customizing Products & Brands for Social Media - The Motorola Cliq
Nicole Hurdle - 12.7.2009 11:30 AM
The holiday season is upon us and electronics are constantly being advertised to consumers as the perfect gift. There was a particular electronic gadget that caught my eye in a commercial being titled as “the first phone with social skills.” I had to check it out for myself. The next day I was at TMobile looking at the brand new Motorola Cliq phone.
Being a Social Marketing Coordinator at a strategic marketing company, Webolutions, I was highly intrigued by the socially advanced phone. Only a few short days after seeing the advertisement, I purchased this phone. As I began to play with the applications and features, I realized how customized to social media it truly was.
The phone is designed to have feeds organized, delivered and streamed through the device through different categories:
- Happenings
- Messages
- Social Status
- News Feeds (including blogs)
- Calendar Events
It also allows me to update my own social media profiles all at once. Though this can be viewed as a great and fun phone for personal use, it is also important to take note of its possibilities from a business perspective.
As with social media, you can customize who you receive updates from as well as how often. This customization is what truly sets itself apart from other products. View the commercial for this phone to see how it advertises its customization: Motorola Cliq.
Brands are advertising their products specifically based on their social networking capabilities. For more information on the use of social media for advertisements, read Social Marketing: A Channel for Success.
Why is this important for your business?
As a business, it would be ignorant and probably foolish to not recognize the impact social media now has. Phones like this one can be incredibly useful when developing your social marketing plan. It allows for an immediate connection to your social networks, and a great way to stay involved in the conversation.
Products are becoming less and less mass-produced and more customized to the individual. Check out another blog post from Webolutions on Product Customization to the individual.
The bottom line is, technology is moving into a world where social media is the way we communicate with our friends and family. Even more importantly, businesses are moving this direction as well. If you are not on board of the social marketing train it’s time to jump on and join the conversation!
